A two-day journey down the Mekong from the Thai border to Luang Prabang, the most romantic way to arrive in Laos.
The slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang is less a mode of transport than a rite of passage. Over two unhurried days, the Mekong carries you past forested hills, fishing villages and stretches of river so quiet you can hear the current. You sleep one night in Pakbeng, a one-street town perched above the water, and arrive in Luang Prabang the following afternoon.
Most travellers begin from the Thai side at Chiang Khong, crossing the Friendship Bridge into Huay Xai. Buy your ticket the day before, pack snacks and water, and settle in. The boats are basic but the river views are extraordinary, especially in the early morning mist.
Time your trip for the dry season, November to February, when the river is navigable and the air is cool. Build in a few days in Luang Prabang at the end, the slow-boat arrival is only the beginning of what makes Laos special.
